Take Action

  • Urge the EAC to Reject Documentary Proof of Citizenship Requirements

A new proposal before the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) would require burdensome documentary proof of citizenship—such as passports or birth certificates—to register to vote in federal elections. This change could block an estimated 21 million eligible Americans from the ballot box, especially rural voters, students, women, military families, and communities of color.

The League of Women Voters urges members to speak out against this voter suppression effort. It’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote, and adding costly documentation requirements only creates unfair barriers for eligible voters. The EAC is currently accepting public comments, and it’s crucial that they hear from voters who believe in protecting access to the ballot for all Americans.

They need to hear from you about how damaging this policy would be before they make their decision. And it only takes a couple of minutes to make your voice heard.
